Chinatown & Hoyu Culture Center

Parade to Chinatown will start at Hoyu Culture Center

The Hoyu Folk Culture Festival honors General Humin, revered by the Chinese Fujian people, showcasing the values of community, harmony, and the legacy of his contributions to humanity. Originating in the village of Hoyu, Fujian Province, China, this annual celebration includes a grand ritual ceremony on his birthday, the 19th day of the first lunar month. The township will host band parades, and adorn itself with lanterns and banners while households prepare feasts and offer prayers to General Humin. Each year many countless overseas Chinese folks will travel home for this grand ceremony.

Over time, Chinese immigrants from Hoyu Township have brought this tradition to America. Organized and led by the Philadelphia Hoyu Chinese American Association, the inaugural Hoyu Folk Culture Festival took place in Philadelphia's Chinatown on February 22, 2009. Serving as one of the largest American celebrations of this age-old homecoming tradition, the festival features a procession, musical performances, lion dances, and traditional opera. People from across the East Coast converge every year on the event, illustrating its significance as a vital link for immigrant families from Fujian to preserve their cultural heritage and pass down traditions to future generations.
